Tell me about yourself:
My name is Samantha Shorey, I am a 28 year old caregiver to my husband. I have worked in retail my whole life, 12 years. Okay my whole life has been short haha, but really that is all I have done!!! Most recently I was a Store Manager. Unfortunately but fortunately my life suddenly changed August of 2018 when my then 30 year old husband had a massive stroke. My husband came home in January 2019 and we realized me working full time, especially in retail where the hours are unreliable, wasn’t going to work for us. I made a hard but easy decision to leave my full time career to become my husbands full time caregiver. These past few months have been the most amazing months. But I knew not being on the move all day long like I was as a Store Manager was going to be hard for me so I knew I needed to find something to keep me busy between my husbands therapy and doctor appointments. I knew being crafty was it! Children have always been a passion of mine and I couldn’t think of a better way to live through that than to make cute, adorable things for babies!
What did your business look like when you first started?
I had no idea how to sew! My sister in law brought over my husbands late mother’s sewing machine and gave me a very fast lesson on how to sew! I decided to stick to things small and simple, like a square and rectangle, ha! I thought I was going to start with receiving blankets, but I realized burp cloths and wash cloths were a better place to start! It all happened on my kitchen island. My loud sewing always interrupted my husbands TV shows! Oops.
Tell us about what you make now and why you love making it:
I have now purchased a desk and some small shelving and created a place to sew in our spare bedroom! No more interruptions for the husband and I can blast some 90’s country and nobody will care!!! Raise your hand if you can relate to the love for 90’s country? No shame here!
I am still creating adorable burp cloths and wash cloths but I have also fallen in love with silicone beads! I have added pacifier clips, teething rattles, keychains for diaper bags or purses, and necklaces for moms to wear. All made with silicone teething beads!
At what point did you decide your “hobby” had the potential to be a business?
This was the goal or dream from the beginning! Knowing our income was changing with me leaving my job, I wanted to be able to build something great from the start! And I am thankful to have some amazing fellow crafters and small business friends within an arms reach to help me along!
How did you come up with the name of your business?
My sister and I spent some time texting back and forth one afternoon, bouncing random names and words off each other until something sounded right. So really there isn’t a special meaning to it or really a reason other than I love it!
Who is someone you follow on Instagram that inspires you and why?
Honestly, I am just joining the Instagram world. But the women I love out there are, Chrissy Metz, Kelly Clarkson, Melissa McCarthy, P!nk. They are such powerful independent women who know what they want and don’t care what others think about them and that is how I am trying to live my life.
What has been a highlight since beginning your business?
Hearing the feedback of someone loving their gifts they were given or something they purchased for themselves.
What advice do you have to share with someone who may want to start a handmade business?
Go for it! It will always be scary until you actually try it. Are there endless questions along the way? Yes! Are there going to be people who don’t love your stuff? Yes! Are there so many unknowns? Yes! Can you do it? YES!!!! You just need put your heart into your handmade items and you will succeed. But know, it takes time and it won’t come immediately... unless you are super lucky!!!
